Konica Minolta Achieves Goal of Sourcing 100% Renewable Electricity in Its MFP Production Site in China
The second production site to achieve the goal
January 21, 2020
Tokyo (January 21, 2020) – Konica Minolta, Inc. (Konica Minolta) today announced that one of its MFP production sites in China, Konica Minolta Business Technologies (WUXI) Co., Ltd. (BMWX) in Jiangsu province, has achieved its goal of procuring 100% of the electricity it uses from renewable sources.
A manufacturer of Konica Minolta’s main products, multi-functional peripherals (MFPs) and digital printing systems, BMWX was certified as a Clean Production Company by Wuxi City in 2017, making the company a leader in environmental stewardship in China.
BMWX installed a solar power generation system, covering an area of 25,000 m2 and with a generating capacity of 1.7 MW, on January 1, 2020, enabling the company to procure approx. 16%*1 of its electricity requirement from solar power.
Starting from January 1, 2020, BMWX shifted to green power certified*2 sources to meet the rest of its electricity needs, thus procuring 100% of its electricity from renewable sources.
*1: Estimation based on the electricity consumed from January to December 2019
*2: International Renewable Energy Certificate that is applicable in China
For Konica Minolta, BMWX is the second production site to achieve the goal of procuring 100% of its electricity from renewable sources, following another MFP production site in China, Konica Minolta Business Technologies (DONGGUAN) Co., Ltd., which achieved this goal in January 2019.
In January 2019, Konica Minolta joined RE100, a global leadership initiative bringing together companies committed to sourcing 100% renewable power for their business operations, and has since been striving to achieve this goal by 2050.
Konica Minolta will step up efforts to accelerate the shift to renewable energy at other production sites by developing optimal measures to acquire electricity from renewable sources at its bases around the world in line with local conditions.
BMWX’s Efforts to Achieve Carbon Minus Status
Under its Eco Vision 2050, Konica Minolta has been promoting the Carbon Minus concept, involving external stakeholders in its environmental efforts to reduce CO2 emissions by more than is emitted from its products throughout their lifecycles. BMDG, in addition to encouraging eco-friendly practices in-house, endeavors to share its environmental improvement measures with suppliers and customers through factory tours and environmental seminars, while visiting the factories of its suppliers to discuss measures to reduce environmental burdens together and help them implement the measures. In doing so, BMWX contributes to reducing CO2 emissions both internally and externally.
